DocVerse is now officially owned by Google. DocVerse facilitates real time sharing and simultaneous group-editing of Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel and Word documents. Started three years ago by a couple of Microsoft veterans Shan Sinha and Alex DeNeui, DocVerse will make collaboration of documents among people easier over cloud. It also allows chatting with anyone who is collaborating with you for a particular document. Google wrote on its blog about DocVerse “With DocVerse, people can begin to experience some of the benefits of web-based collaboration using the traditional Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint desktop applications.”

Definitely Google is trying to make people more accustomed to cloud based applications. Google says “we recognize that many people are still accustomed to desktop software. So as we continue to improve Google Docs and Google Sites as rich collaboration tools, we’re also making it easier for people to transition to the cloud, and interoperate with desktop applications like Microsoft Office.” This is something which Google needed from the very beginning as most of the users still prefer using Microsoft Office over Google Docs.

DocVerse is currently a paid tool, making it free is going to kill the Microsoft Office’s market big time. Although it is worth noting that Microsoft is soon going launch a complete web-based version of the Office suite with Microsoft Office 2010. Lets see how thing turn up.
